Pennsylvania has been awarded a half-million dollar grant by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that will improve students’ literacy skills at the middle and high school levels through a planned professional development initiative in which secondary, content-area teachers will learn about, implement and assess the results of student literacy tasks designed to achieve college and career-ready writers. This grant will be implemented statewide through the infrastructure of PA’s Intermediate Units. Teachers will develop common task-based formative assessments using the Literacy Design Collaborative framework, merging the Common Core State Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects with subject area content for a rigorous, engaging classroom experience that will develop high-level reading, writing, and thinking skills. Teachers will engage in the design and scoring of the task-based formative assessments. The results will include statewide access to field-tested, task-based assessments and exemplars, which will be placed in the SAS portal for use by educators working to implement the Common Core State Standards.

This training is for ONLY those faculty members that have been designated by their district to participate.
